Looks like I spoke too soon -- this being a recession (as Bill points out),
the $119 figure was not firm.

In fact, the hotel I have in mind in Santa Clara is available at a cost of 
$89+tax, which is the same
price as the February meeting in Las Vegas.

SJC is the closer airport, but from SFO there's a free shuttle to the
Millbrae CalTrain station from which one can take the train to Santa Clara.
No rental car would be needed.

If everyone's happy in Las Vegas, and thinks WG5 will be just as happy,
that's fine with me (I like to travel!).  
But for the same price we could have a meeting in Santa Clara.
