Paul McJones has constructed a web with materials about early Fortran,
including the original November 10, 1954, "Fortran 0" memo from Backus,
and the January 1954 MIT Engineering Memorandum E-364, from Laning and
Zierler, entitled "A program for translation of mathematical equations
for Whirlwind I".  Backus credits this as the first operating algebraic
compiler.
